rewind

don't worry i'm still here. haha

FRIDAY came home to Ape throwing a Bridal Shower for one of her coworkers. I processed to have a couple of beers, a couple of strong cocktails and a handful of apps. rookie move, i ended up passing out on the couch at 9:30 after everyone left.

SATURDAY somehow i avoided a hangover that i thought i was sure to get. went to jammin java for jayden's 4th b-day and checked out Agent 23 Skidoo. They are a rap group that raps around food, friends and other kid themes. Fun times, we were exhausted went back home to sleep, skipping the White House Xmas tree visit and Ikea. Please i thought i lost my wallet so i was kinda worrying about that.

I found my wallet in the house and look a nice looooong nap. Let in the evening we went back to Ate's house for b-day dinner. Scarfed down lechon, kare-kare, and pancit. We got Jayden Hungry Hungry Hippos for his bday cause he asked for it randomly one night while watching cartoons. So when he opened it up it actually was excited to get it. I guess this is when kids memories start to click and build and they start to get smarter than us. Afer that we played soccer in the basement and hit a wall. Again we skipped on getting more drinks and watching the bj penn fight opting for going home and sleeping early, though ape did try to stay up for Jacob on SNL.

SUNDAY woke up early to grocery shop, ape had relatives coming over to check out the condo so we had to get some breakfast items and the weeks groceries. If you're in wegmans pick up the spicy asiago bagel! Ape made a yumm-o spinach n mushroom quiche which we actually at for dinner, not brunch. We took Ape's relatives for pho and Ape actually had a bowl for herself. We found a place where they put the cilantro on the side. After that we crashed again for a couple ours.

We headed to Leesburg around 5, which looked bare but that meant easier shopping for us. We left Leesburg at 8 and continued on to Dulles Town Center which closed at 11. I felt bad for people that had to work late on Sundays, no one is out shopping but weirdo people like us. All in all we picked up a handful of gifts and are almost done with our list. Xmas is actually sneaking up on me, i didn't know that it was next week. NEXT WEEK!

can't stop, won't stop... nyc in august

basically since the beginning of summer we've off and running city to city, event to event. it's been great, after a long week of work, its good to party down with fam and friends. but the traveling is no joke. i think i took a day from work in the middle of the week just to recop from the past weekend and prepare for the next. so i think i'll start this quick photoblog in the beginning of august.

for our wedding aniversary ape n i planned a trip out to nyc. we totally love nyc and always have a good time here.

classic jumping pix in time square. if you haven't been lately the street are blocked off to traffic and table and chairs line the street to invite chillaxin. i wonder if its still blocked off now that summer is here.

we planned to see a show but didn't want to pay full price. so we decided to take a chance and do the TKTS discount thing to see if we could get watch a show for 20% to 50% off. we waited in a long but fast moving line in times square but to ended up not purchasing tix from TKTS because they didnt have seats together for the show I wanted to go to. But we had a back up plan and purchased tix to Lion King directly at their theater. full price but it was worth it.

before the show we met up with jp for lunch....and a pitcher of sangria. food yum, sangria yum. itis and tipsy before the show yikes.

that's our dining table! come reserve a seat. we'll be settling on our modest condo on that day. eek! that's the big news. haven't been able to blog about much because there's been soo much going on. work, fam, friends, traveling, enjoying life, stressing out life, haha you know how it is. twitter may be the best way to see what i'm up to, http://twitter.com/jazzyjae

but if you really want to stick around here and stalk me...if i get around to it, a super awesome summer picture post will be worth the wait.

time wasted...

random thoughts...

seems like i've been wasting my creative talent or just delaying projects that i've had in mind. i'm not making it an excuse but it's like there's never enough extra time or energy to make things happen. but if other people can do it, why can't i?

so i'm gonna start with paint. i totally suck at painting. i didnt do well in college in art fundamentals with paint and i'm sure this first project will reflect my poopoo skills. but i have to start somewhere. i've been saying i've been wanting to do artwork for our place for the past couple of years. ape even bought be paint and a canvas for xmas last year or was it two years ago. that's been collecting dust.

so since the apt is a mess and in the process of moving, i'm gonna go ahead and add to the mess and make my own mess. it's gonna be a late night too, we've got plenty to do tonight like help friends out with their wedding stuff, play with diggy, start a plan to pack, do paperwork etc. but if i don't do something tonight then i have a feeling it will never get done. and hopefully me writing this down will make stick to the plan.

Big Buns revisited....

We had Big Buns yesterday and got the real burger this time. Last time i got a bangin mahi mahi burger during lent. Def try one of those if you like fish. The burger was really tasty, fresh, juicy, and had great curb appeal. but it wasn't too memorable like a Ray's or Good Stuff. Overall I was satisfied with no complaints...maybe the bun was too big. You should check out Big Buns if you're into sauces too, they allow you to choose one of their handful of special sauces on the side. They're really good with the burger or with the fries. Check out the sweet potoato fries too! So, I'll rank it 4th in the DC metro burger competition. 1. Good Stuff Eatery. 2. Ray's Hell Burger. 3. Five Guys.

Eat it!

weekend rewind

what a weekend of sports eh?

1st the CAPS finish off the rangers in the 1st round! yes, this CAPS team is awesome. who would have thought that hockey would be entertaining, but this is basically all that the DC area has going for them as far as sports goes. We've got great young talent, that's winning and it's great!

2nd Manny did his thing! i was totally not expecting Manny to handle Ricky Hatton like he did. He totally crushed Hatton from the sound of the bell. Don't forget about Freddie Roach, he came up with the perfect plan and Manny literally executed Hatton, in what, 2:59. Time to make a t-shirt! Mayweather better watch out the end of this year. I suggest he skip out on the Marques fight and start prepping for Manny.

Now the CAPS are 2-0 in the 2nd Round. The Celtics look like ass. Volleyball season has begun, let the sports continue!

ps. nobody better take those rebel 95s at flight club. i got dibs. nm you can have them...

star trek next friday....

i was never into star trek when i was a kid. it always seemed to nerdy and dull. my neighbor across the street on the other hand was sooper into it. he could also beat me in any video game ever made on nintendo to dreamcast. anyways i've seen this trailer for Star Trek a few times now, and something inside me wants to see it. gone is the old cast, a plus. and it looks like there's some cool CGI action scenes in it. check it out....

i might have to catch a matinee since ape will prob not wanna watch.

see ya!

Ponntiac, part of GM, looks like it's going to be the first to get the Axe.

Story here

Problem: GM has way too many brands. They all use the same platforms for their cars, so they're making the same crappy cars with minor face lifts. It's sad but i think this has to happen. Hopefully they'll focus more on making one quality car in each class, than making a fistful of half-ass copy cat rental cars.

food friday!

well here's a back blog of some food that we've cooked.

Lotte has a new location in Chantilly. What's Lotte? It's an international supermarket, filled with everything you need to recreate that asian dish your mom makes, that you've been craving but you won't drive 3 hours home just for some kare-kare. there's also alot of things in there that will make you say "wtf!" "is that legal" or "i'm gonna die if i eat this."

last friday...i think we were supposed to fast last friday...but anyways, ape had a craving for crabs. so we ventured to lotte cause we heard that blue crabs were mad cheap, like $1.50 a pound. we scooped up some crabs, like 6 for $2.25, and since i can't eat crabs anymore i checked out what else was in the fish section. man they had every damn fish that you could imagine. they butterfly it, de-gut, de-scale, decapitate...however you want it they do it. i didn't want to stink up the apt so i just got a slab of fresh mahi mahi.

we also picked up some sushi and seaweed salad. both were really cheap. con, if you need help and have to ask an employee a question, good luck in getting a response that sounds anything close to engrish. this was probably the first time i asked an asian man a question, which was answered by a spanish speaking employee, that i could understand.

anyways here's some food.
seaweed salad. spicy tuna. i pan seared the mahi mahi. wasted down with Kirin Ichiban Beer.

ape's steamed crabs.

Also, i finally made french toast a couple weekends ago too. delish!

hi hater...question.

wedding season is about to start and i know i'm going to see a handful of this. this really bugs the shet out of me. i know some of you think it's the coolest thing ever but i ask....why the hell would you get suited up, all formal and classy, then decide to throw on some kicks? i know your nike blazers, jordans, dunks, or even vans might be the hottest thing right now and match your attire perfectly but wtf??? i totally think sneaks have no place in or around a wedding or formal event. with the exception of a hip hop dance or if the bridal party decides to do it, but i still think it's tacky.

i just think it's kinda disrespectful to the host. they've shelled out tons of money for this beautiful event and you've gotta show up wearing patent leather AJ 11s. Are you trying to out flash the wedding itself or did you think you were choosen to kanye west for the night? even if they are the rarest, flyest of kicks, they aint right.

something else on my hater list...if you're out of college (even high school), buy a freakin suit! or atleast get a sport coat and some slacks. also, why are you sagging your pants with your button up shirt? haha that just looks corny.

geez i feel like barney stenson talking about this, soo i'll stop here. but in his words and ron burgundy...."Suit Up!" and "Stay Classy."

ya dig!

I got the hook up son! Two fairly new cds that i suggest to you...

India Arie - Testimony Vol 2, Love & Politics
It's very chill and makes you feel happy. haha.

Prince - lotusflow3r/mplsound/elixer
uh oh, a 3 disc set all about...you know. You know Prince makes that baby making music so nothing is new there. But check out the 3rd disc, Elixer. This cd all about Bria, one of Prince's artist. It comes off on the jazzy, soulful side and of course a mix of Prince's flairy side. It's good listens anyway you look at it. Just make sure you're not around your mom or a boss when listening. Oh, and "Valentina" is an interesting song too. First prince sounds like lil wayne, weird. Then the song is about Salma Hayek. He's basically telling Valentina (Salma's daughter) how hot Salma is and that she needs to tell her mom to holler at him. hahaha. Anyways i know Prince isnt something you'd normally check out, but that Elixer is worth it.

reduce, reuse, recycle

for awhile now ape and i have been trying to figure out ways to conserve or try and not waste things around the house. first off, energy is a big thing, especially when the electricity bill comes in. luckily we haven't had to use the heater for the past month and a half, because for some reason our unit stays at a comfortable temp, thanks neighbors if you're blasting our heaters. that's a big help. also, I've unplugged electronics from the wall that aren't being used all the time, like the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Turning off our iMac and macbook (if plugged into the wall) at night when not in use helps out too. I took a look at the electric bill this month at the rate dipped $8, just for unplugging and turning off electronics!

we also got back into the Brita seen. ape and i have a couple nalgene bottles already but used them at the office using their filtered water. at home, we'd drink deer park. we fianlly did the math and found that though the filters cost more than 24-packs of water, we drink about 3 24-packs in the amount of time we would have to change a filter. we'll probably drink more now that we're in the gym more often. at Target you can get a Brita on sale and they're offering a nalgene bottle for a penny with the purchase. after shipping it's $4.21. you can choose between 3 different sizes. not bad!

and lastly we're using those reusable bags at the grocery store. we've had the bags for awhile now but haven't used them regularly. after being fed up that our plastic bag holder was overflowing we decided that we have to force ourselves to use the reusable bags. plus, they hold more and they're easier to carry. i've also heard that local governments in the area are trying to pass legistlation to start charging customers at grocery stores 5 cents per plastic bag.

we're doing our part, it's not much but every little bit countts.

food friday!

nothing new this week so i'll throw it back to a couple weeks ago. Ape made Saffron Chicken with parsley.

I think this is the recipe...
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 onion, cut in lengthwise slivers
1 T olive oil
1 tsp. butter (optional)
pinch saffron (about 1/4 tsp.)
1/2 cup chicken stock
1 T fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

Use a heavy pan which is not too large and has a tight-fitting lid. Trim all visible fat and tendons from chicken breasts and cut in 1/2 strips on the diagonal. Brown chicken well in olive oil (and butter if using). Remove chicken from pan, add onion, and brown over very low heat until edges of onion pieces are turning golden. Add chicken back to pan. Heat chicken stock, add saffron, and pour over chicken. Simmer on very low heat with pan covered 30-45 minutes. Add chopped parsley, lemon juice, and a tiny bit of additional water if needed, and simmer 15 minutes more. Serve with brown rice.

Overall the dish was very good. The silky lemony buttery sauce was enough to drool over. WE totally killed it. I don't think we had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. haha

Deal of the day....

From what i've read here and there. if you don't have much space and don't want an s-load of speakers around your family room, a simple sound bar & sub woofer is all you need to amplify your home movie watching experience. But still these things are around $500. On slickdeals.net you can find a Yamaha for $200!

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YAS-70BL-Front-Surround-System/dp/B000V7H1HC?tag=

If you're looking for sound quality that will make Twilight or Slumdog at home seem like you're hearing it in the theater, make a move for this.

food friday!

Ape dominated in the kitchen last week. She made some bomb turkey and spinach lasagna one day, and udon soup other day, pictured. She also made a stuffed portobella mushroom thing which has not been uploaded. This week we ate out a lot because of St. Patty's day and my bro's bday. But i did make yummy grilled mahi mahi fish tacos.

shoe MGK is magic

my cool greys weren't looking soo cool after 4 years on the beat and being all around the world. I picked up some SHOE MGK from Ape's cousin's husband that is starting his franchise in Vegas soon.

for one the product works! it's all organic so it can clean virtually anything without killing the material. the only thing it can't so it make old yellow soles turn white again. Regardless with alittle elbow grease you can bring back your old dope kicks, back from the dead. if you're a shoehead that can't buy kicks all the time and wanna keep your old kicks in rotation, Shoe MGK will save them.

Friday Food Day!

yesterday i was totally not in the mood cook. but ape txt'ed me asking if i found any yummie recipes for the chicken breast we had defrosted. so i looked up a recipe for stuffed chicken. so i found a parmesan-stuffed chicken breast on yahoo.com. i didnt totally follow the recipe to a T. i added some ham and swiss, cordon bleu style. and emeril's essence for alittle kick.

w/ Bearnaise sauce

for the 1st time making this, it totally surprised me. it was full of flavor. the lemon zest had a really good kick. i did burn some some of the ham and the chicken was a tad dry on the outside, but still moist on the inside. this happened because i forgot to subtract some cooking time because i only made half of what the recipe called for. but, def. gonna make it again, more healthy, minus the wannabe cordon bleu ingerdents.

weekend rewind

Our weekend started on Thursday after work. Ape and I headed down to Richmond for V-day dinner at Avenue 805 with her fam. I wasn't expecting much from this quiet off the strip restaurant. Our ravioli appetizer didn't help. Too much pasta, not enough filling. But all of our entrees made of for it. I ordered the Italian meatloaf, wtf right? But it was really good; it was layered with prosciutto, pepperoni and salami and topped with marinara. The mash and veggies were bangin' too.

Fri., I went to hit some balls with FIL. I sucked not to mention gloveless. It hurt so bad hitting balls in the cold. Thus I got a blister. After we got ape and met up the rest of the fam for lunch. cheese steaks, grool. Did a Costco run after and tried to get FIL to look at other SUVs besides the Highlander as their next vehicle. Checked out the Tribeca and CX-9.

Friday night after heading to VA beach we had dinner with my rents. I wanted to eat at Yukai Buffet but my dad was opposed. So we went to LongHorn Steakhouse. Everything was aight. Medium rare isn't in their vocab though; my prime rib came out well. Boo. But it tasted delish and the sides, and salads were great. After we stopped by Krispy Kreme for some Hot n Fresh doughnuts.

Sat we checked out a highlander at checkered flag for FIL, and then went back home and napped. For dinner ape and I finally went to Yukai. The sushi was small but good. The non-sushi foods like the Chinese, and Korean food were really good. Udon soup was off the hook. My god-bro ruined the experience by telling me the restrooms were horrific. You know... after dinner we when to Markie's and Ronnie's going away house party. We had a great time and it was good to see everyone. We partied till the morning...

Sun we headed back up to nova. Michelle threw Rey a "surprise" b-day at Top Golf. My shots got 100% better and ape was striking the ball pretty well too. Again we ate a ton of not so good for us food. When we got home at 7, I felt like crashing but I got myself off the couch and went to the gym with ape. We really needed to go to the gym esp. after eating out for the past 4 days.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

this weekend i got to see my aunt who is fighting cancer. we thought the worst was past us but they recently found a set of tumors in her brain. now aside for the chemo that she had for her breast cancer, she now has to have chemo treatment for cancer that has spread to her brain. she also had a total knee replacement that she's rehabbing for. now reading this you probably have a mental picture of a weak, unhealthy person that probably didn't take care of herself too well in the past. but my aunt is a strong, passionate, uplifting, and warm woman. she's probably one of the most inspirational people that i've ever meet. she's a very caring woman that always did her best to give her family nothing less than everything they wanted, but at the same time showing them that things don't just magically appear. she's always there for her friends, to laugh, to cheer, and to listen. she literally gives her all and lives life to the fullest.

so it's sad for me to hear about all of these recent struggles that have bring her down. but when i see her, it takes away my sadness and replaced with joy and hope. she never shows signs that she's hurting when i know every minute painful. and she always talks about the progess that she's making, no matter how big or little. she's soo strong for putting soo much effort into getting better.

now all i wish is that all of our prayers are answered. especially when a person like this who hasn't done anything wrong, lived the way of the lord, and has been there for others even when their chips are down. for her family, especially my best friend and his brother and sister, i feel for them soo much. they are strong, wise, independent and optimistc just like their mom. i see that they are hurt and i know that if they could do anything to take the cancer away they could.

this isn't over and i know that auntie will beat the hell out this cancer and defeat it for good. i know this, because anything less would be fall way short of auntie's standards. and aunite doesn't settle for less. so with that we continue to pray and know that we are with you every step of the way.

tackle box

we went on saturday after picking up Cathy who was visiting from boston. i heard they place had the best $13 meal in dc. you get one entree with two sides for $13. i got fried catfish, mac n cheese, and sweet potato fries. it wasn't bad at all. ate mae also ordered for the whole table, calamari, clams, lobster roll and clam chowder. everything fried passed, crispy, well seasoned and fresh. the clam chowder was bland, downer. the lobster roll was aight, Coastal Flats has a better one. I need to try a real one in Boston. i couldn't stop eating the fries, maybe since i cooked my own crusted red pepper and rosemary fries earlier that week.

the decor had a nice feel, imagine being at a regular old pier that has a restaurant on it, now picture that in the heart of Georgetown. i know right.

all in all. skip it unless you're dying for something fried and only have $13. yes, i was craving fried fish! but i would rather spent the $13 at Good Stuff Eatery.

what they said...

donuts to the next level?

ape and i fianlly had fractured prune donuts this weekend. we checked out the location in ffx/oakton/vienna. 1. i hate the PAN-AM shopping center. ever since going there in college for weekly art supplies i've hated it. m-fing impatient people that can't wait for people that are backing out of parking spots, people wanting to get ran over, and just a poor layout.
so i don't know if it was this franchise or all of them are like this but this one had bubble tea? signage was super ghetto and customer service was typical mcdonalds style (but he did hook it up with one extra doughnut). down down downers.
i ordered a banana nut bread doughnut and ape had the OC Sand and Hawaiian. the donuts were good but not a earth shattering as everyone on the radio, reviews, and blogs say they are. i'd prefer a good ole glazed krispy kreme donut over this anyday. but since KK is all the way on route 1, these will do. but i don't think donuts have to be this complex or cost this much. it's just a donut. i guess i just can't appreciate it as much as the next.

S2000 coming to an end

http://hondanews.com/categories/1097/releases/4934

this is the final year of the Honda S2000. in my small circle everyone knows that a used S2000 is around the top of my list to replace the Highlander when the time comes(winter 2010). this news is sad not only because this the end but, this also means the resale value will no longer be going down at the rate i want it to. plus, there will be less and less to choose from. i'm currently eyeing this one...

"Hell-no" Cupcake

so after burgers and coffee we wanted to hit up this new cupcake shop that people have been raving about, Hello Cupcake. it's located in Dupont Circle across from Krispy Kreme. I was excited to to try them out and what other DC cupcake spots had to offer.

The location was alittle hard to find but it's a few doors down from Big Hunt and Cafe Citron. It's Right at the neck of Conn. Ave where it hits the circle. The Decor was a nice retro feel, curvy wooden seats. blah blah blah....

the cupcakes. $3. icing stacked high upon hard muffin top. ape had a CHOCO, chocolate coconut. she complained about it be being dry on the inside. she didn't like it nor did i. i had a 24 carrott. the icing was super sweet and the cake was tasty but the hard muffin top really bothered me. we had a gingerbread the next day and that was actually pleasing.

overall, they charge too much for a hard, dry, cupcake that tries to cover their flaws with mile high icing. we definitely will not be going back. georgetown cupcakes +1!

Good Stuff

After a good night of partying on Friday night, waking up waaaay late on Saturday morning and then cleaning the home. Ape and I decided to get out of the house and venture out for a burger. Well i wanted a burger and she wanted crab legs, but i won! so after debating between Big Buns, Ray's Hell Burger and Good Stuff Eatery, we choose the latter. We got a primo spot on Mass. Ave. across from Cosi with is right next to GSE. As we walked in what first got me was the signs that gave Obama soo much love. They even had an Obama burger and they were also giving out Obama wristbands.

The deco is very comfortable with dark wood tables paired with steel chairs. Walls were white with plasmas around, the largest one tuned to Bravo TV. the owner Spike was part of the cast from TOP CHEF/Chicago. oooooookay i'm typing too much let's get to it.

I got a farmhouse bacon cheeseburger, ape got a burger melt. the fries were really good cause they had different kinds of mayos to dip with.

the chipotle dip was the best. the burgers are super fresh and not greasy! the produce was extra exrta fresh. everything was great and totally hit the spot. Spike was even there passing us by a few times and hanging around the balcony were we were eating. Spike even said HI to ape while i was getting our food.

all in all, i'm coming back for another burger! if i had to compare it to another burger i would have to say it's five guys style with less grease, less mess, and way better meat and produce. To me it's even better than RHB, cause it's not overwhelming, RHB is still a good burger though. RIght now, GSE has my 1st place vote!

Friday Food Day!

After eating out all weekend starting last thursday. It was best that Ape and I cook the whole week. It's not hard on us to do that. We enjoy cooking and we're good at it.

Monday, was Pasta in vodka sauce w/ sausage. vodka sauce was made from scartch, you just need crushed tomatoes, vodka, heavy cream and seasoning to spice it up.

Tuesday, Ape ripped it up with Chicken Afritada. it's harder to make than adobo or tinola, but it's worth the time and effort cutting taken to cut up everything and waiting for everything simmer in. it's very delicious. plus i got to play the 360 while Ape manned the kitchen!

Wednesday, i tried my hand at Bulgogi from scartch. you gotta let the short ribs and marinade (soy sauce, seasame oil, seasame seed, scallions, sugar and whatever else i threw in there) work over night.

then you just grill it up. we aren't allowed to have a grill so i used our grill pan.

i'm sure it would have been alot better if it was cooked on a grill but it was good. watch out the sugar can burn up leaving a crust that ain't soo good.

Last night, we had leftovers along with some battered fish that Ape made from scartch again and fried up in our lil fry daddy.

Gotta thank everyone that gave us such wonderful cooking ware that make cooking soo much easier and fun! Hopefully I can get more well versed in different cuisines amd post more cooking updates. or cooking dibocales.
